Reading self-help books can be a deeply therapeutic experience, especially if you’re going through a challenging time or seeking guidance on a specific issue in your life.
Below is a list of my favorite books from the past decade—each of which has been transformative in helping me step into my power and become a more well-rounded individual. Whether the focus is on my relationship with myself, my husband, or others, these reliable guides have provided comfort and support when I’ve needed a little TLC. Think of them as a form of free therapy! (Well, not exactly—because that would underestimate the value of the therapeutic process, which I’m a huge advocate for!) But you get the idea. 😉
1.) The Pivot Year by Brianna Wiest
Ugh, this book is currently my all time fave. Brianna Wiest is like a modern day Mother Theresa. I love love LOVE reading her words, and can’t wait to dive into her other books. I am literally obsessed with her. Brb, buying all of her other books. My next read: 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think!
2.) Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find – and Keep – Love by Amir Levine & Rachel S.F. Heller
This is a powerful book for anyone looking to examine their current unhealthy attachment patterns and learn tangible strategies for developing a more secure attachment.
3.) Boundary Boss by Terri Cole
This book is awesome if you struggle setting boundaries in your life, saying no, or feel often like you need to please others. 10/10 recommend.
4.) The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
I love Mark Manson’s no-bullshit approach to life. I fell in love with this book years ago when I first read it, and have highlighted half the book.
5.) Worthy: How to Believe You Are Enough and Transform Your Life by Jamie Kern Lima
This is a beautiful read that encourages you to embrace your full self while helping you work through the insecurities that make you feel like you’re not good enough.
6.) How to Do the Work by Dr. Nicole Lepera
Okay, I am OBSESSED with Dr. Nicole Lepera!!!! I found her through Instagram and saved nearly every single one of her Instagram posts; her words always make me feel seen. When I found out she was also an author, I knew I had to read her books ASAP.
7.) Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown
This wouldn’t be a complete self-help book list without my girl Brené. I think Atlas of Heart is my favorite book of hers. It’s pure art.
8.) The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
Another beautiful read by Brené that will encourage you to bravely lean into your vulnerabilities and imperfections.
9.) One Day My Soul Just Opened Up by Iyanla Vanzant
Iyanla Vanzant is such a beautiful writer. This book has daily devotionals (for context, I’m spiritual vs. religious) that will help you find peace with yourself, be present, and let joy into your life. It touches on so many aspects of human suffering. It’s a fantastic book if you are going through a hard season in life.
10.) The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman
This one is a classic, and I’m sure many of you have heard of The 5 Love Languages. I encourage you to read the book rather than just taking the online test, because the book provides valuable context—not only about understanding your own needs, but also about how to fulfill your partner’s needs in the way they best receive love.
11.) In the Meantime by Iyanla Vanzant
I read this book while I was going through my divorce and it was seriously LIFE CHANGING. Most of the pages were soaked with tears, as I was leaning hardcore into my inner work while doing so. It’s a beautiful read, along with One Day My Soul Just Opened Up.
12.) The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. Aron
To my fellow highly sensitive ladies – you are not alone! This is a wonderful book for those who maybe have felt misunderstood a great portion of their lives. It is an incredibly validating read. Our needs matter, too!!
13.) Don’t Believe Everything You Think: Why Your Thinking Is The Beginning & End Of Suffering (Beyond Suffering) by Joseph Nguyen
This book helps you shift your mindset and find peace with your current stage of life, no matter what season you’re going through.
14.) Unf#ck Your Brain: Getting Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-Outs, and Triggers with science (5-Minute Therapy)
Obviously, this one is for my fellow ladies who don’t mind tossing around the occasional swear word! If you’re easily triggered by F-bombs, this probably isn’t the book for you, lol. But for those of us who feel seen just by the title, this is a fantastic read for helping you retrain your brain through cognitive restructuring.
15.) The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
An oldie but goodie. I will forever think there is so much to learn from Stephen Covey. His principles of highly effective people stand strong through multiple generations.
Have you read any of these? What else would you add to this list? Shoot me a comment below!
